Scratches in Laminate Flooring Can Be Fixed

If you plan to use laminate flooring in your home, you need to understand that at some point in time, it will need to have scratches repaired. This comes from things such as moving furniture around, walking in sharp heels or anything that tends to dig into the laminate. It can become one of your most important home improvements so you’ll be pleased to know that you don’t have to replace the floors. It can simply be repaired.

Most of the time the repairs needed to laminate flooring aren’t major. A glass falls and gouges a little hole, or a toy car may scrape it, but these aren’t bad. They’re just surface damage. But if you don’t repair them, they’ll take away from the beauty of these floors.

The biggest problem with performing minor repairs to your laminate floor is finding what you need to fix them. You most likely don’t have what you need just laying around the house. You’ll need to go to your local hardware store to buy a repair kit. As some manufacturers also make repair kits to go with their flooring, you should start at the store where you got the flooring.

If you can’t find a repair kit made especially for your flooring, a generic repair kit will do just as well. The contents usually include a tube of putty or wax. This works as the filler. Some repair kits include colored putty and others contain paint for you to mix a matching color for your floor prior to putting it on the scratches. Either of these will work fine and usually cost anywhere from $10 to $20.

Most repair kits will come equipped with a putty knife and anything else you need. However, if yours doesn’t, a Popsicle stick works perfectly to apply the putty to the scratch.

Before you start to fix the scratches and dents, be sure the area is clean and dry. There’s no need to fix it if a dog hair ends up stuck to the floor under your repair putty. When the area is ready, start mixing the putty. After applying it carefully, let it dry and your floor will look as good as new.
